How VDI enables work from home

  • Lofa Technologies solution :VDI

Before the surge in work from home (WFH) caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the popularity of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) was growing rapidly. The shift to large-scale WFH further increased the prevalence of VDI and the growth is projected to continue well into the second half of the decade with research by Global Market Insights projecting over 15% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) in the persistent VDI market through 2025 .

But what exactly is VDI and why has it proven to be the right solution for so many businesses? At a high-level, it is because VDI provides an approach to desktop computing that is: secure, flexible, scalable, easy-to-manage, and affordable. Of course, there is no single one-size-fits-all approach to enabling remote work or providing desktop services, so here we will provide a deeper dive on VDI, how it stacks up to the alternatives, and when & why it makes sense for businesses.

What is VDI?
In simple terms, VDI is the virtualization of end-user desktops on a central server.
In traditional workplace IT environments, each client desktop is a dedicated computer with significant compute, storage, and memory resources. With VDI, a central server (or cluster of servers) runs multiple virtual machines on a hypervisor. This shifts the IT management paradigm from a distributed to central management.
